While most people have no use for color
theory, artists need an accurate understanding of color because it affects how
an artist identifies, creates, and uses color in a painting. Many people have
come to believe that studying a particular color model will limit them in their
possibilities, but in reality it’s when one really begins to study color theory
that the doors open, and possibilities can be seen in numerous ways. Proper usage of color greatly enhances and
enlivens good technique and style. Most
unfortunately, color theory is all too often incorrectly taught, making it
virtually useless in most cases. It would be useful to examine traditional
color theory, the history of primary colors, and the purpose of color theory,
color perception, and finally, CMY color theory.

All across the United States, our schools are
teaching color theory. Starting from a young age, children are taught that
there are three primary colors from which all other colors are mixed. These
three colors are Red, Yellow, and Blue. They are primary, therefore they cannot
be mixed by any other colors. Mixing
equal amounts of any two of the primary colors creates the secondary
colors—Orange, Green, and Purple. These colors are then put into a wheel with
the primaries forming an equilateral triangle and the rest of the colors
filling in the spaces to form a complete circle. Complementary colors are those directly across from each
other on the wheel. When mixed, they create brown. What is not taught is that
it is impossible to get a saturated green or purple from the primaries.
Creating a bright pink from red and white is impossible, and it is indeed
possible to mix red and blue, the supposed “primaries” that cannot be created. The
model doesn’t even begin to stand up to minor scrutiny when compared with what
is known scientifically. This fail in color theory may be why many artists
claim that color theory isn’t important to study because it can only be used as
a vague guideline anyway.

Though there are many different
systems for organizing color, it has long been accepted that all colors can be
mixed from just three colors. Aristotle was the first to present this idea.
Though the belief that these three colors are yellow, red, and blue, has been
in existence since medieval times, it was not until Francois D’ Aguilion, a
Jesuit mathematician, embraced them as the primary colors from with all other
colors are mixed, did it gain popularity and spread. Interestingly, though many
ancient painters were well aware of the primary colors, it was not the
painter’s common practice. In fact, it was said to be an unsatisfactory method
for mixing colors. Many things are wrong with this theory. A deeper look into color theory shows that
there is actually no such thing as a primary color. No three colors, no matter
what the colors, can produce all other colors. The problem is not that we use
and teach primary colors, but that we give them definitions that are untrue.
Primary colors must not be taught as fact. A proper definition is as follows:
“Primary colors are sets of colors that can be combined to make a useful range
of colors. For human applications, three primary colors are usually used, since
human color vision is trichromatic.”<span style="font-family: Cambria; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: "MS 明朝"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">[1] While color organization is extremely beneficial, it should always be kept in mind that our color systems were created to aid us, not limit us.
The purpose of color theory is to create a system that organizes color into an understandable structure that helps us to describe and reproduce color. The invention of primary colors helps artists simplify the vast array of colors we have to work with, as well as gives insight into the makeup of individual colors as they relate to the whole color spectrum. The color wheel helps organize those colors in a way that allows color relations to be easily viewed and studied. Yet, it is important to note that as helpful as color models are, they are still only man’s feeble attempts at organizing the vast amount of complex color information that we have.

There are many theories regarding what color really is and how we perceive it. Part of the reason color theory is so unstable is because of the controversy on this subject. Scientists cannot prove much of the theories regarding color perception. Since all of our models of color theory are based off of color perception, it is impossible to boldly proclaim any one theory as fact. Some say that color is in light, while others say that light has no color. Some believe that color is purely a sensation of the mind, while others believe it is a mixture of the above stated views.

Despite the controversy in how we perceive color, it is generally accepted that Newton’s conclusion of seven basic colors in the light spectrum, is correct. Based on this discovery, two color spectrums have been developed: the additive spectrum and the subtractive spectrum. One deals with light and the other with dyes, inks, and pigments. Physicist Thomas Young (1773 – 1829) discovered that when mixed together, Red, Green, and Blue light created white light. These colors relate very closely to the way it is believed that we perceive color through the R G B receptors in our retinas. Thus, Red, Green, and Blue are considered the primaries of the additive spectrum—the spectrum of visible light. The subtractive spectrum, called subtractive because wavelengths of light are absorbed when mixing one or more colors together instead of added as in the additive spectrum, has a different set of primaries. These colors are Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. An interesting observation is that the primaries of the additive spectrum (Red, Green, and Blue) are the secondary colors of the subtractive spectrum, and likewise the primaries of the subtractive spectrum are the secondary colors of the additive spectrum. This is because of the reverse effect of dealing with light addition verses light subtraction. Complementary colors are opposites, providing you use the correct color wheel. When mixed, they should result in gray or black, not brown as conventional color theory teaches. A complementary color is the color that is left when you eliminate the hues that makeup a particular color. Cyan is made up of green and blue, thus leaving red as it's compliment. [look at the diagram below] An easy way to find a complementary color is to use the afterimage test. The longer your eyes rest upon a color, the more fatigued the stimulated photoreceptor cells become. This in turn causes them to lose sensitivity so that when your eyes are returned to a blank space, those colors remain muted and the paired primaries shine through strongly. Notice that in no way does the conventionally accepted color model of Red, Blue, and Yellow primaries fit in with these scientific discoveries. If Red and Blue are both primaries of paint, as traditional color theory tells us, then how can they be primaries of light too?

Traditional color theory is just that, traditional. Discoveries in science have long since surpassed it, and it’s time for artist’s catch up. While there is still much to be discovered, many speculations of the past have been proven false. No favors are gained by holding onto these old theories. It is especially damaging when untrue theories are presented as facts by schools and art teachers. Only some of the ideas presented work, thus frustrating students and causing them to disregard color theory as a reliable source. Even through a glance at a science book, it is easy to see that traditional color theory no longer has any standing in our evolving knowledge. Peeking into history, shows that it's makeup possibly never even had any scientific basis to begin with, and was merely speculation. While some artists may get along fine without ever studying color theory, it is helpful for others to have an organized way of viewing such a complex subject. There is a large variety of color wheels and triads to choose from, but at the present, the CMY system seems to be the most scientifically accurate. However, in the end it comes down to what is most useful for the individual artist. Not only are there different styles to consider, but a landscape artist's palette may be different from a portrait artist's, and an illustrator's palette from a cartoonist's. As long as it is remembered that all color models are an attempt to organize an already existent world of color, studying it will only serve to further enable the artist to see new possibilities in color mixing and harmony.

"One of the most effective ways we sabotage ourselves from a life in the arts is by waiting for that imaginary day when "it" will be "easier." We think of going to the page or to the easel, and then we think, "It's too hard. If I wait a little, it won't be so hard."

Waiting for art to be easy, we make it hard. We take our emotional temperature and find ourselves below normal, lacking in resolve. We would do it, we know we could do it, but we decided to wait until the doing of it is more effortless.

The truth is that getting at it is what makes getting at it easier. Each day that we write creates a habit of writing in us... It is easier and softer way to work today, if only for a few minutes, no matter how hard or impossible it seems.

Most of us want not only to do it but to do it well. We want not just to write but to write brilliantly, not just to paint but to paint a masterwork.

When we are not working, it is not because we are lazy. It is because we are frightened. We have bought into the idea that in order to work we must be able to work "well," and we are afraid of working poorly.

"I am willing to work poorly" is often a very good place to start. By surrendering our grandiose expectations, we come down to size. Being willing to work poorly, we may actually work very well. Some of the best work is done on the worst days. Some of the finest ideas lie at the very bottom of the well.

It is the doing of work that makes work easier, the simple doing of work no mater how hard it may feel to begin."

Ever felt like a dry piece of bread? No ideas, no inspiration... just dry? Have you ever wanted to be creative but just didn't know how? What is creativity anyway? Well, put on a pink top hat with sparkles + blue diamonds and put your mind on a roller coaster because we are going on a wild ride! We're going to look at three things to help you learn how to use your creativity: feelings, imagination, and action.

First, let's define Creativity.
Creativity is the use of imagination. You know, that thing you used as a little kid.
Okay, now we can go on.

#1- feel it

You're happy. How do you express it? Do you say, "I'm happy" or do you with twinkling eyes say "I feel like I am smothered in chocolate mint ice cream, covered in sprinkles, with cherries between my toes."... get the memo? Creativity starts when you have one foot in the box, and one foot out.

#2 -one foot in, one foot out

So how do we do this one foot in, one foot out thing? Open up. Loosen up. Allow your mind to travel the roller coaster. Nothing is impossible... if you want, elephants can stand on one foot on top of a grape... and bananas can wear sparkly dresses and talk. Let yourself imagine in vivid greens and corals pinks.

#3 -do it

Take that image you have created and put it into words, or paints, or music, or whatever you do! Practice. The more you use your imagination, the better you will get at it. Your life will be like teacups full of sunshine, and smiles dripping with joy.

And because I think it's important, I'm going to throw in a couple extra tips:
- Creativity takes work. Eventually, you may find yourself having ideas flying into your head like a lady bug, but many times, frankly, it takes work. So, chose to be creative.

- Don't be afraid to fail. Not everything works, k? Not all my ideas develop. Sometimes that little idea turns into something great and that big idea? Well, it got stomped on and thrown in the trash. Just keep swimming!

A couple misconceptions:

- Only creative people can be creative. Psh. Some people are naturally creative, but that's doesn't mean you can't be creative too. Kids are creative right? The key is remaining creative when you grow up. Open your mind up... think like a kid again. Remember: anything is possible!

- Creativity starts with a completely original idea. This is huge... and totally wrong. Creativity can start from anything. You see a flyer with bright colors and it sets something off in you, later you see an umbrella with tiny monkeys on it, so you go home a paint a cup with monkeys and and bright colors. See? It's not stealing, it's inspiration and that's totally fine and dandy.

We've looked at feelings, imagination, and action... and we've even looked at a few tips and some misconceptions!
Are you feeling creative yet? I am! So what are you waiting for? Get busy!

Good morning!! This morning I started off the day with a smoothie bowl! It was simple and delicious and the best part is, it is very nutritious too. Filled with fruits and topped with nuts, oats, or whatever you want, it is a perfect way to kickstart your day. I also had a hard boiled egg to add some protein, but it wasn't pretty enough to get in the picture ;)

Berry Smoothie Bowl ~

1 frozen banana

a couple handfuls of frozen blueberries

2 spoonfuls of greek yogurt(this is optional)

2-4 tablespoons lemon juice(I love lemon, so I did 4)

1/2 cup water*

In a blender combine the banana, blueberries, yogurt, lemon juice, and water. Pour into a bowl and top with pretty much anything! I used banana slices, pecans, and oats.

This recipe is so versatile. You can use any fruit combination so long as you keep the frozen banana--it's what give the smoothie it's creaminess. Or you could use yogurt instead. I prefer to keep the yogurt amounts down since dairy is tough on my stomach.

This is a regular smoothie bowl, but you could step it up and make it a superfood smoothie bowl! By adding food like chia seeds, grass powder, maca powder to the main smoothie and puffed quinoa, hemp seeds, and bee pollen to the top, you double the nutritional value. There are a million possibilities!

*you could also use milk instead of water. Too much milk makes my stomach hurt, so I love that this recipe does not need it. Also good healthy substitute for regular milk would be almond, coconut, or rice milk. I have tried almond milk, and it is delicious.

Just play around with it! I don't think you can mess this smoothie up... if you can, I tip my hat to you :)

I'm always looking for cute crafts to do. These hand-painted mugs make perfect gifts!

You will need:

-a ceramic mug(s)(Old Time Pottery is a great place to get them)

-rubbing alcohol

-enamel paints

-Ceramic marker or oil based sharpie marker

First clean the outside of your mug with rubbing alcohol. This ensures that the paint has a clean surface to stick to. Next draw out your design with your marker. You might want to practice on a sheet of paper first. Once the marker hits the cup, it's not coming off! Next you can begin to paint. The paint will rub right off if you make a mistake. When you are finished let your cup air dry for 1 hour. The next step is very important if you want your mug to withhold washing: place your mug in the oven and turn it on to 350F.(it's important that you put the mug in before you preheat the oven! Otherwise your mug might crack.) Bake for 30 min., and then let it completely cool in the oven before you remove it.

And then ta-da! You have a cute new mug that YOU made! ❤

P.S. I've seen these decorated JUST with ceramic markers before and they look pretty awesome too, if you aren't much of a painter!

Could we with ink the ocean fill,

And were the skies of parchment made,

I desperately needed a pair of new white flats, but I didn't want to spend the money on them. So I decided to take my old ones, which still fit, and give them a makeover! It was super quick and easy!

Start by covering the insides of your shoes with newspaper.

Then, spray paint! I did a coat of primer and then two coats of regular white spray paint. It's best to do several light coats, rather than trying to do it all at once and ending up with paint dripping all down the sides of your shoes.

Next cut out pieces of fabric to line the soles of your shoes. I made a paper temple first, by tracing the bottom of my shoe. Glue in place.(I either used fabric glue, or super glue...I don't remember! haha)

So there you have a fresh, bright, "new" pair of shoes!

We had a memorable Independence day, Thursday. The temperature was very tolerable and it only rained for a half hour.

Every year I like to make something festive! This year I made little cupcake cheesecakes. Cute?

Preheat the oven to 325˚ F. Line cupcake pans with paper liners. In a small bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, melted butter and sugar. Stir together with a fork until well blended and all the dry ingredients are moistened. Press 1 tablespoon of the mixture into the bottom of each cupcake liner. (I like to use a small drinking glass to easily and evenly press the crumbs down. One of Andrew’s sippy cups works wonderfully.) Bake until just set, 5 minutes. Transfer to a cooling rack.
Dot a ½ teaspoon of the raspberry puree in a few dots over the cheesecake filling. Use a toothpick or a wooden skewer to lightly swirl and create a marbled effect.

Bake until the filling is set, about 22 minutes, rotating the pans halfway through baking. (They will look quite puffed initially but will return to normal quickly.) Transfer to a wire cooling rack and let cool to room temperature. Transfer to the refrigerator and let chill for at least 4 hours before serving.

Awkward:

- spring snows...

- a little old man in a scooter chair at Walmart asking me to get him down a pack of pudding from a shelf. Okay yeah, I can do that. I reach up and get the pack, but also proceed to knock cups of pudding all over the floor. He felt sorry for me and kept apologizing.

- walking past the kitchen counter and unknowingly picking up the handle of a 2 cup measuring glass with my pocket and spilling it all over the floor. #imsosmart

- trying to make homemade cough drops. My mom said it smelled like I was making cigars.

- skipping out to the van and missing the door and banging my head on the doorframe. It was loud. ouch

- explaining..... to the doctor that I was skipping out to the van and banged my head. *sheepish*

- when the dr. tells me to repeatedly touch my nose as fast as I can. okay...

- the man at competition who joined our chatting group of girls to tell us that we make his heart flutter. I believe it was the first time that none of us had anything to say. um....thanks?

- all my failed projects lately... *sigh*

Awesome:

- a grandpa that brings us donuts in the morning!

- peanut butter banana smoothies. I am in love.

- having more time to think up projects that will admittedly probably result in failure...

- the key change in this song

This little princess turned six this week. It's hard to believe. I remember when we first brought her home from the hospital all sweet smelling and wrapped up in a blanket. I remember peeking in the bassinet at her literally every five minutes, hoping that she would wake up and cry so I could hold her. I remember mixing up bottles for her(that awful smelling baby formula is one thing that I do not miss!)and mom teaching me how to feed her. I remember whispering in her ear that someday she would learn to talk too. I remember when she learned to sit--I took her too my room, sat her on the floor, put pillows all around her, and taught her how to play tea party. I remember the way she said "yes, ples" when I asked if she wanted some tea. I remember the day she took her first steps and the day she learned to ride a bike, too.

Now, six years later, she brings the same smiles to our faces as she jumps around the room like a monkey, looks up "how to tie shoes" on youtube by herself, and randomly quotes lines from movies. She's such a ham. But a smart ham. This girl is a reading whiz. Some days she sits by me when I'm doing school and tries to read my books. "Aren't you done with that page yet?.... I am."

Yes, this thing. It pretty much took me all of January, February, and half of March to get ready to compete. But it was all worth it! Every bit, because Thursday was a phenomenal day! So many memories.

The day started early at 5:30 in the morning. I mean, let's face it girls, it would be a shame to go to competition and not look your best, right? So yes, I got up at 5:30. My hair had different plans--it looked like second day hair...you know, the smashed frizzy curls? meh. oh well :)

Things were pretty normal at first. We had a long drive, donuts in the car, and butterflies in our stomachs. The college was filled with people--girls in long dresses with big gorgeous hair, and guys in suits and teasing smiles.

The choir was our first group performance. All went well--definitely not our best year, but not bad considering the practices we missed because of snow and sickness!

My flute solo was at 2:30. I had practiced earlier and was having a rough 'lip' day. I nervously sat down by my assistant band director, Adrian, to await my turn. That's the hardest part...waiting. I must have looked as nervous as I felt because she told me to remember to have fun. This is suppose to be fun? Oh yeah, I forgot. Soon it was my turn and I had to introduce myself.(Seriously, that's almost the worst part. lol) I played it...I didn't do very well. I wasn't relaxed and so my notes came out a bit pinched and I had a small memory lapse at the end. I won't pretend that I wasn't upset afterwards because I was. You practice for months and months and then you only have one chance. One chance. I won't lie....I did cry. But tears aren't a sign of weakness, they are a sign of strength trying to peak through. The next hour was difficult as I had to go on practicing and performing in our small instrumental ensembles when I really wanted to get away from everybody. But I am grateful for kind judges I had. The older of the group walked up to me with a smile and said, "Thank you so much for your hard work, sweetie"

Of all the people there that day, there are a few that I am really thankful for. My band director(whom we shall call Mr. H) and his daughter Adrian are two of them. Both of them being performers themselves understand more than anyone what it feels like to be disappointed in your performance. Though they may not have realized how upset I was, what they said afterwards was encouraging and helped me.

And also my parents were great support. It didn't really matter how well I did because I knew that they would always encourage me. And like my dad told me, it doesn't matter whether you get first, second, third, or don't place at all because what you learned... it's still there.

And last but not least, our group!! They are an awesome bunch of kids! I really appreciate their hugs, high-five's, and good luck's! It's really sweet to me how we can be such good friends... even though we are quite spread out in ages. I can tell you from experience that not every group is like that ;)

As it neared the evening awards ceremony, I walked out into the main lobby to find Mr. H motioning me over. He asked me where my parents were. I told him. Then he said, "I wanted to tell you together, but you got best of show!" Woah. Wait a second. That flute piece that I stunk up earlier got BEST OF SHOW? Yes, I'm pretty sure my jaw dropped to the floor. The excitement lasted for about 2.5 seconds before the nerves hit. Wait. I have to play this tonight in front of a couple hundred people? gulp.

I didn't play till near the end of the awards ceremony. Let me tell you, it was torture to sit there with butterflies in my stomach through all of the elementary and junior high awards. Finally I was called down from the balcony to get ready to perform. As I stood at the bottom of the stage waiting for them to finish the senior high art awards, I heard my name called. My pencil drawing got first place!!

Now it was time. As I walked up on the stage, strangely, my fears decreased. This is going to be fun. And it was. This time I was able to relax more and let the music flow out. Oh I still made a few mistakes, but I was pleased that I didn't bomb it. I'm so thankful that God gave me the strength to do my best, and for the support of all those who encouraged me....and were secretly nervous for me :P

It was the most thrilling experience of my life and I'm glad I have it on video. But I want to remember more than that. I want to remember how it felt, how it sounded to me to have my flute echo throughout the auditorium, and the butterflies in my stomach. I want to remember what it was like to look out over those hundreds of people looking up at me expectantly. I want to remember the whispered "good luck's" from the guys and girls in my group as I left to play and the smiles, cheers, and high-fives when I got back. And I want to remember my parents proud eyes and hugs afterwards.

I owe a lot of my success to Adrian, Mr. H, and my family. Honestly, this was no easy song to learn. I think I cried almost every time I played it for the first week or two. I'm so thankful for the encouragement from my family when I didn't feel I could do it. I'm thankful for the assurance from Mr. H, that even though I couldn't play it perfectly, it was still impressive. And I'm thankful for the advice given to me by Adrian. Not only did she correct several of my mistakes, she gave me the courage that it didn't sound as bad as I thought. She probably doesn't realize it, but I'm confident that I could not have done half as well without her...mostly because of one thing she said. "loosen up. You're too tight" I know it sounds simple, but without her saying that I know that I would have tightened up when I got nervous and pinched my high notes until you could barely call them notes. Loosening up made all the difference in the world. :) :)

I would say that placing first with my drawing; placing first, getting best of show, and a scholarship with my flute made it a pretty amaaaaaazing day!! And all the tears and struggles made it just that much more of a beautiful and amazing victory.

More video's from the day can be found here and here.

I'm also really proud of the band! They went as a junior high band this year, and did great!! The junior high girls ensemble also did fantastic!! I'm also proud of all the individuals who played! Way to go guys!

Congratulations if you made it this far! You're a really amazing follower/friend!! :) :)
Yeah, yeah, I know this is suppose to be awkward and awesome thursday, but everything awkward that happened to me, happened last night, so, that's the reason behind the awkward and awesome friday!

Awkward:

- this ^ photo

- getting stuck 35min. away from home because of icy roads and having to stay the night at a hotel.

- my mom's driving...(sorry mom ^_^)

- men scraping the the sidewalks just outside our hotel room while talking(read: yelling) to each other. Never mind that it's past midnight and people are SLEEPING.

- three people in one bed. Need I say more?

- turning over in bed to find that your sister's nose is two inches away from your face.

- hearing a person from the room above ours tiptoe to the bathroom, pee, flush, then tiptoe back. Guys, you can hear EVERYTHING in a hotel.

- burning up all night when it's below freezing outside...people turn down the heat!

- cinnamon rolls...with mold, in the hotel breakfast room. I'm giving this hotel one star...or maybe a half of a star.

- catching your sister's eye as you see a slipper feeted..no..footed..waiit. (you know what I mean, a guy wearing slippers!), fuzzy haired man who looked like he'd been in bed for a week.

- people at a hotel in the morning. That's it.

- texting your sister who's sitting in the same room, on the same bed.

- dreaming of a Starbucks Frappuccino <strike>all the time</strike>

Awesome:

- getting home!

- berry delicious smoothies. yum.

- finding free books online!

- <strike>my two month late birthday present,</strike> my ipod!!

- my sweet followers!!

- gluten free chocolate chip muffins. Two words, so. good.

The world around me is a palette of gray--as if someone took a great big bucket of paint and slopped out all the color. There is a tranquil feeling about the color gray. It places a fog over your eyes and makes you just want to lay around on the couch and read books.

I love rain. This week it dribbled on the sidewalks and off the gutters in a peaceful pitter patter, the sky grew dark, and squirrels ran up on the porch for cover. They were so cute as they marched up to the front window and peeked in(which drives our dog crazy)while munching on bird food.

But rain is best at night. It's sweet strains put me to sleep like a lullaby. But no strong winds or my eyes get as huge as a scared rabbit's and I start freaking out about the old trees around our house ;)

Best foods for rainy days:
Soups + comfort foods like potatoes

Best clothes for rainy days:
fuzzy sweaters + socks

Best books for rainy days:
something that makes you feel warm inside

Best music for rainy days:
Jim Brickman + Yiruma
Ever since I remember this has been one of my favorite dishes. It's a delightful mix of vegetables and chicken in a creamy sauce, topped with a crumble. I was sort of bummed when I couldn't eat it anymore after going gluten free. So I thought, why not make a gluten free version? And while I was at it, I cut the recipe down to one serving so I can easily make it in a personal sized dish. Besides, it's cuter, right?

Country Chicken Casserole(gluten free)

Filling
2 tablespoons all purpose gluten free flour(I use a pamela's baking mix)
1/3 cup milk
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/8 thyme
1/4 cup chicken(pre-cooked)
2/3 cup mixed vegetables(canned or frozen)

Topping
half an egg
1 tablespoon butter
3 tablespoon all purpose gluten free flour
1 tablespoon parmesan
1/8 teaspoon baking powder

Directions
Preheat oven to 400.
Melt butter. Stir in flour, salt, pepper, and thyme until smooth. Stir in milk. Cook until thickened and boiling. Stir in Chicken and vegetables. Pour into small dish.
Mix flour, baking powder, butter, cheese, and egg in small bowl with fork until crumbly. Put mixture on top of casserole. Bake 15-20 minutes or until bubbly and brown on top.

In just a few hours, 2013 will make it's grand entrance. People across the globe will be sitting in their homes, watching with glee as the clock chimes midnight. Much joyous celebration will arise as fireworks color the sky and noisemakers fill the air, while 2012 will quietly slip into the shadows--never to be seen again.

Why is the new year such a jubilant occasion?
Because it's a chance to begin again--a chance to do better, a chance to be better.
Just like a fresh snowfall, it's perfect--no marks, no footprints yet made.

This year I decided to pick three words to define my goals for 2013.

embrace:
I choose to embrace my duties as a daughter, sister, friend, student, artist, and musician, with eagerness, passion, and consistency.

reflect:
I choose to reflect Christ's love in all I do.

inspire:
I choose to inspire others to create, laugh, and make memories.

What are your resolutions?
